Galaa - made up of Aley Waterman with Hey Rosetta’s Adam Hogan, Josh Ward, and Ashley Chalmers - started in St. John’s Newfoundland in 2013 with their EP “Young Hymns” and

quickly created a buzz. They sold out their first show, and quickly opened for acts including

Tegan and Sara, Owen Pallett, Rich Aucoin, and DIANA.The band just released an

ethereal new album that features searching vocals over delicate electronic flourishes.

 

 They then applied for MusicNL Sound Recording grant and won it, allowing them to spend the next year in and out of various studios in Newfoundland recording their forthcoming album

“The Speech.” Produced mainly by Romesh Thavanathan and Adam Hogan, the two

of them and Aley spent much focus, love, and attention to bring these songs to

the electronic world they currently reside in. Aley moved to Toronto in June 2016

when the album was almost complete, and finished up a couple of final songs with

Blockbuster Records, which included getting some drums overdubs

by BRAIDS’ Austin Tufts.

Aley is a writer who mostly writes about desire and the soul and is currently working on an MA in Creative Writing at U of T. A lot of the content of the songs in “The Speech” deal with questions of how things endure over time. The track “Ender” has the lyric “death is the feeling you get

when you win” and asks “what lasts?” over and over. The foggy ethereal magic of

St. John’s Newfoundland carries over in these blue, searching but often hopeful tracks.
