Fort Festival’s Third Year Delivers a Weekend to Remember
The seaside electronic music festival, Fort Festival, returned to the northern Catalan town of Tossa de Mar early this October, bringing with it performances from headliners including Mind Against, Ellen Allien, Tale of Us, Recondite Adriatique, and Erol Alkan.
The third year of the festival featured three nights of countless DJs on two stages bringing music from all over the world to listeners in Spain.
Attendees squeezed into the remains of a historic defensive fort built in the Middle Ages, once used to protect against incoming pirates, where now performers bring the best of techno and house to the normally quiet fishing town. The festival kicked off on the night of Friday, October 4 with
Lis Sarroca, who’s played at Fort Festival every year since it's invention, graced the Church
stage with her carefully-created brand of techno.
Later, in the evening Akkan, N’to, and Âme & Mathew Jonson took the Church stage throughout the night, before Mind Against closed the
show with the duo’s synthy, upbeat, infectious sounds, bringing the whole crowd to a euphoric
high. On the Far stage, Pulp, Squire, Henry Saiz and each played a two-hour sets with
Egyptian-born and Barcelona-based DJ Raxon finishing off the night.
Day 1
Saturday’s festivities began earlier in the day with Hayden F playing the Church Stage and Enai starting us out on the Far stage. Next up on the Church stage was Khat, followed by HAAi, Recondite, FJAAK and finally Ellen Allien closing day two with her signature futuristic,
high-energy sound.
Coming in after Enai, the Far stage featured Blond:ish, C.E.E. Shepherds, Ouno & Remi for
the early evening.
Taking us into the late night and early morning were Erol Alkan and Gerard Bauza, whose
up-beat tracks keep the crowd dancing through the end of the set.
Day 2
The final day of the festival packed a punch on both stages, beginning at 3 p.m. with Nice Rodas, Julí, matHame on the Church stage and Recode, Hitch and Hallsax on the Far stage.
Later in the day, Patrice Bäumel, Adriatique and the long-anticipated Tale of Us on the
Church stage.
On the other side of the fort, Terr performed a lively set, followed by La Fleur's uniquely trance-inducing music brining the festival’s third year to a close.
FORT Festival was born in 2017 to offer a different musical event than what was already being seen in Catalan lands. The walled enclosure of Tossa de Mar is one of the great jewels of the Costa Brava. The old castle, originally from the Middle Ages, is located on top of a hill, next to the beach and on the seafront, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. It is also located in one of the best gastronomic areas of Catalonia.
