FLYING LOTUS
Shares new tracks "Spontaneous" ft Little Dragon & "Takashi" taken from new album "Flamagra" out May 24.
Last week, Flying Lotus announced 'Flamagra', its new album on Warp Records: a sprawling opus with a dream cast (including David Lynch). Today, he unveils the first extracts. The two
tracks "Spontaneous" and "Takashi" form a mini-suite and represent our first step into
the musical universe of Flamagra.
'Spontaneous' is a seductive ballad with Yukimi Nagano (Little Dragon) singing on a funky canvas. It blends perfectly with 'Takashi', an instrumental track driven by a piano that swirls
in cosmic jam and blows. The title is a tribute to Takashi Kudo, artist of the creative project
team Lab. Flying Lotus was very inspired by the visual installation he visited at Tokyo 2018.
Almost 5 years ago, Flying Lotus' latest album, You're Dead! was released and nominated for a Grammy Award. Throughout this time, the Los Angeles-based artist with a thousand talents has been working on a series of projects: he collaborated with Kendrick Lamar on the classic
To Pimp a Butterfly, wrote and directed the comic-horrific hallucination Kuso (which
premiered during the Sundance Festival), and produced most of Thundercat's Drunk
album. He has also made his Brainfeeder label the most consistently innovative label
of the decade.
This is Flamagra - a work that takes all the creative advances of the last twelve years of his career and takes them further. This new album to come on Warp Records includes hip-hop, soul, jazz, global dance music, tribal polyrhythm, IDM, Beat Scene from LA, but rises above a very precise vortex whose coordinates remain blurry.
It's not just a Flying Lotus album, it's perhaps the decisive album. An astral and afro-futurist masterpiece of deep soul, cosmic dust, of a striking originality.
"I've been working on stuff for the last five years, but it was always going in all directions. I have always had this thematic idea in mind - a concept that persists around fire, an eternal flame on top of a hill. Some people love it, others hate it. Some go there for a romantic date, others burn love letters."
Present on Flamagra (in order of appearance): Anderson, Paak, George Clinton, Little Dragon, Tierra Whack, Denzel Curry, David Lynch, Shabazz Palaces, Thundercat, Toro y Moi,
Solange and more...
