Share first single “The Shore” taken from the upcoming EP Movement.
The Shore is CIEL’s lush dream pop jaunt, heavily leaning on the interwoven guitars, pulsing bass line and intriguing vocal harmonies.
“The song is about a moment when you feel stuck in your life and you are waiting until your life will ‘really’ start”, Michelle explains. “In the same time you realise that that is just an illusion and that your life has already
begun, and you are living it right now.
Losing the connection with that essence can feel extremely frustrating.”
There’s an intrinsic mystique to CIEL‘s dreamy alt-pop gems, which feel both innovative and nostalgic. Comprised of Dutch musician Michelle Hindriks and the friends she made upon relocating to Brighton, they are fast earning kudos and have an otherworldly EP produced by Penelope Isles’ Jack Wolter on the way in 2020.
From a very young age Hindriks had the gut-feeling that England should be the place to continue her life journey. Mid-2018 she finally gave in to this feeling and left The Netherlands for the vibrant music scene in Brighton. The change of scenery sparked her creativity and she soon formed a new band.
Guitarist Jorge Bela Jimenez met Hindriks in the summer of 2018, bassist Kieran Mansfield came into the picture soon after. Their friendship and shared creative passion has helped to cultivate their own sound, keeping the essence of Michelle’s tracks, blended with their diverse individual influences, drawing from the likes of Broadcast, Alvvays and Cate Le Bon.
Debut EP ‘Movement’ delivers moody alt pop with magnetism, merging shoegaze with post-punk, noir rock and dream pop. Hindriks’ gentle yet purposeful voice conveys a wistful and ethereal quality, juxtaposed with kaleidoscopic guitar soundscapes, driven basslines and energetic
drums.
Over the last year CIEL has performed alongside artists including Hatchie, Sasami, TEEN and Penelope Isles at esteemed venues such as Chalk, O2 Academy Islington and
The Old Blue Last. Their hard working, DIY ethic has seen CIEL produce accomplished performances at festivals including Eurosonic (NL), Le Guess Who (NL) and SPOT Festival (DK),
as well as recent tours to The Netherlands. ‘Movement’ is set for release in Spring 2020.
