Cass McCombs' ninth album, Tip of the Sphere, has received much praise. After the recent video "Absentee", McCombs returns to the album's first single and the album's main theme,

"Sleeping Volcanoes", with a video in which the dancers destroy Tahiti Pehrson's

contemporary artwork, "The Rising Body".

The video was shot in San Francisco in the Financial and Tenderloins districts and in the forests of Marin County. As McCombs described earlier, "Sleeping Volcanoes" refers to:

 

"People who cross paths on the sidewalk without being aware of the emotional volatility they are approaching, like a sleeping volcano

that could erupt at any time".

Tip of the Sphere follows Mangy Love in 2016, where Cass McCombs made his television debut at the Ellen DeGeneres Show and was featured in the Sunday Arts & Leisure section of the New York Times. It was named "Best Rock Album of the Year" by Pitchfork, presented in the Washington

Post's "Best Music of 2016" category, as well as in many other reference lists in 2016.

While most of Cass McCombs' albums have been produced in different studios over a long period of time, Tip of the Sphere was recorded quickly and with great determination at

Shahzad Ismaily's Figure 8 studios in Brooklyn.

 

This new approach gives her songs a raw immediacy and a particular balance between compassion and experimentation. Rock songs have more fervour, ballads are more

beautiful, explorations are more confident and jazz and Latin music sounds are

embedded in the background.

Designed by Sam Owens (aka Sam Evian), Tip of the Sphere includes the main group of Cass McCombs (guitar, voice), Dan Horne (bass), Otto Hauser (drums) and Frank LoCrasto (piano, organ, etc.), as well as several guests.
