BARRIE
Barrie, Dom, Noah, Sabine, and Spurge – collectively known as Barrie – began releasing music together in the early months of 2018. Their first single, “Canyons," arrived in February, quickly resonating with fans of ambient, dreamy pop. It wasn’t until June that the group shared their second single “Tal Uno," a shimmering tune that recalls 80s synth tones and features haunting vocal melodies. The third and final single in the series, “Michigan,” also features a shift in production style, this time opting for the more traditional rock-band instrumentation of drums and guitar.
Collected together for a 12" release with Winspear, the 3 singles make up side A. For the B-Side of the record, the group wanted to involve the work of some friends from the Brooklyn house and techno community. FaltyDL & Shura, who Barrie met through The Lot Radio, handled a downtempo remix of “Canyons," while Brother Michael, a long-time friend and engineer, remixed “Michigan."
Converging upon Brooklyn from all over the world, most of the band initially met via their involvement with The Lot Radio, a Brooklyn-based online radio station. A regular at The Lot found Barrie’s music online and approached Spurge and Noah (who both DJ at The Lot) about forming a band with Barrie. With the addition of the fresh-from-London-drummer, Dom (of Is Tropical), the band was nearly formed. The last hill to climb was finding a bassist. The answer… setting up a Tinder profile to track one down. Sabine, Brazil via Berlin, swiped right, and Barrie was born.
Singles is out October 12, 2018 via Winspear.
Bizzarre: What are you plans for today ?
Barrie: Well actually I went to a funeral. It wasn’t someone I knew very well but it was beautiful and it's got me in a surreal mood.
Bizzarre: If you could go anywhere now, what place would you choose ?
Barrie: I’m at home in New England for Thanksgiving and I’m really happy right here now :)
Bizzarre: What is your biggest dream at the moment ?
Barrie: I really hope we get to tour in Asia at some point, I'd love to see Japan
Bizzarre: If you had a superpower, what would it be ? And why ?
Barrie: The ability to regulate my body temperature in any condition, I'd be comfortable all the time. I think that's maybe the most selfish answer possible lol.
Bizzarre: A person or idol that inspires you the most nowadays…
Barrie: Judee Sill.
Bizzarre: Which is the music you listen the most at the moment?
Barrie: I've been listening to streams on the Lot Radio - especially going to the archives and listening to Love Injection shows (Paul Raffaele and Barbie Bertisch) and Joakim.
Bizzarre: The history of how you met each other is very original, tell us about it..
Barrie: I met Spurge and Noah through our first manager, Joe. They were working at the Lot Radio in Brooklyn. Joe and Noah brought in their friend Dom (from Is Tropical) to play drums, and then we found Sabine on Tinder.
Bizzarre: How is it working together as a band ? What kind of things (negative and positive) provides to you ?
Barrie: It's way more exciting to think about the music, videos, art, clothes, shows etc with four other people who have totally different backgrounds but great taste than just on my own or with a band of people identical to me.
Bizzarre: Tell us about your two collaborations with Brother Michael and FaltyDL & Shura.
Barrie: We know Drew (FaltyDL) and Shura through the Lot Radio. They were both really supportive of the band very early on, and very generously agreed to do a remix. We love it :)
Brother Michael is a super talented childhood friend of Noah's. He's a great engineer & producer, and also just the sweetest person.
